World’s 5 Most Haunted and Creepiest Cemeteries

We’ve often heard of the word ‘Cosmopolis’ to denote a town or city that is made up of people from different cultures. It’s used to denote an important place full of vibrancy and intercultural activities. However, have you ever heard of the word ‘Necropolis’?

The word Necropolis literally translates to “city of the dead” and is used to denote a large cemetery with elaborate tomb monuments to revere the dead.

Cemeteries are often seen as a place where we go to bury and mourn our dead, but over the years, they have gained great notoriety. From being a haunted space to a spot that some people utilise for practising witchcraft, cemeteries are teeming with possibilities and creepy stories.

Here are the world’s 5 most haunted and scary cemeteries:

1. The Stull Cemetery, USA

Located in Kansas, the cemetery is infamous as the Devil’s throne and one of the portals to hell. Legend has it that in 1850, the Devil and a witch had a child who died not long after and was buried here. Since then, the devil supposedly visits Stull cemetery twice a year to visit his child.

Rumours of strange happenings in and around the cemetery grew so wild that kids began having parties in the graveyard, littering it with beer cans. Since then, it has been cordoned off for trespassers and thrill-seekers.

2. Paris Catacombs, France

Though it’s not a cemetery, technically, the catacombs of Paris are built with human remains. Its walls are lined with skulls and bones and the place is mostly seen as a bone repository. Wild conspiracy theories suggest that it’s a portal to hell spewing interdimensional beings, but most of it is just conjecture.

When you visit the catacombs, a sign at the top reads, Arrête! C’est ici l’empire de la Mort (“Stop! This is the empire of Death”).

3. Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery, USA

This cemetery in Ohio is one of the world’s creepiest cemeteries with the legend of Lady In Gray, who is believed to be the ghost of Louisiana Ransburgh Briggs. Ms Briggs used to place flowers on the graves of fallen Confederate soldiers. It’s a mission that she seems to be carrying on even after her death.

People have reported seeing flowers appearing on the grave of a certain Benjamin Allen. They’ve also reported seeing a lady dressed in gray moving around the graves.

4. Delhi War Cemetery, India

As the name suggests, this cemetery in Delhi was built as an ode to all the Indian soldiers who died during the first and second world wars. The cemetery is located in Delhi’s cantonment area which is infamous for sightings of a woman in a white saree by those roaming around in the area or going to the cemetery.

The middle-aged woman in a white saree and open hair approaches people in their vehicles and asks for help. Not just that, she even chases you at the speed of your vehicle. It’s believed that a woman was killed in this area years ago and her ghost haunts passers-by even today.

5. Gora Kabristan, Pakistan

This is one of the last cemeteries in Lahore and, without a doubt, the scariest one too. A shadow has been seen lurking around the cemetery at 2 AM and people have also reported seeing several headless ghosts. Apparently, this christian graveyard is a hotspot for dark magicians who perform sacrificial ceremonies that bring dead spirits to the world of living.
